The Research Behind the Campaign

The Research Behind the Campaign

Vunja Unyanyapaa is part of Canvas for Change — a research project based in Kilifi, Kenya, exploring how the creative arts can contribute to reducing stigma around neurological conditions and improving public health awareness. You can see more about the overall project at www.canvasforchange.net

What Is Canvas for Change?

Canvas for Change brings together researchers, artists, health workers, and communities in Kilifi to co-produce theatre that addresses the social dimensions of illness and stigma. Rather than presenting communities with information from outside, the project works with them — placing lived experience at the centre of both the creative process and the research. The two theatre productions at the heart of this campaign grew from that process. They were devised, rehearsed, and performed by community members in Kilifi, and are now being shared more widely through film and social media.
